Midwifery care is unique in our modern day obstetric world.
Midwives are trained in and perform all of the routine clinical skills such as blood pressure, measuring the baby, assessing the heart beat, urine testing, blood draws, etc. Data that is needed to establish where the mom and baby are at physically with the pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. Where midwifery care finds its main difference is in the amount of time spent with the family and the unique knowledge that is gained during this time together. The hour long prenatal is spent on establishing a relationship/partnership, education, and most of all to listening to the needs, desires and questions of the mother, father and any siblings. This relationship is what makes midwifery care distinct and desirable to many families.
